Accountability & safeguarding

Protecting the people we serve, and making it safe to complain about us

A person who cannot raise a concern without risking their support is not being treated with dignity, whatever a mission statement claims.

How to raise a concern

Three routes, and none of them go through the person delivering your programme

Reporting routes only work if they bypass the people a concern might be about. These are structured accordingly.

1. A safeguarding concern about anyone connected to our work

Contact our safeguarding lead directly. Concerns about a child or vulnerable adult are treated as urgent, investigated, and referred to the proper authorities where required. You do not need to be certain — a concern is enough.

2. A complaint about how we or a partner behaved

Use the contact form or write to us. Complaints from partner communities can also be made through a route that does not involve the local programme staff, and making one will never affect the support someone receives.

3. Whistleblowing, for staff, volunteers and partners

A separate route that does not run through line management, for anyone who needs to report serious wrongdoing including financial impropriety.

If a child or adult is at immediate risk of harm, contact your local emergency services or child protection authority first.

Safeguarding

Our commitments, without exemptions

These apply to every member of staff, trustee, volunteer and partner organisation. There is no exemption for seniority, for a long-standing relationship, or for anybody’s discomfort.

  • A written safeguarding policy applying to every member of staff, trustee, volunteer and partner without exception.
  • A named, trained safeguarding focal point in every partner organisation.
  • A reporting route for concerns that does not run through programme delivery staff.
  • Background checks and references for everyone working directly with children or vulnerable adults, to the extent local law allows.
  • Mandatory safeguarding training, including for senior leaders and trustees.
  • Concerns investigated and acted on, with referral to the proper authorities where required.

Representation and consent

How we photograph and write about people is a safeguarding matter as much as a communications one.

  • We ask permission, explain where an image will be used, and accept a refusal as final.
  • Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and we then stop using the image.
  • We do not photograph people receiving something.
  • We do not use images of children in distress or undress, or pair a child’s photograph with identifying location details.
  • We do not publish identifiable details from reconciliation, trauma healing or safeguarding processes.

Data protection

We hold supporter and programme data securely, use it only for the purposes it was given, and never sell, rent, swap or pass it to a third party for their own marketing. Our privacy policy sets out what we hold and your rights over it.

Publishing what goes wrong

Our annual reporting includes a section on what underperformed or was stopped, including partnerships we have ended and projects that failed. We publish it because an organisation that only reports success is not giving anyone information they can rely on — and because a culture that hides small failures eventually hides serious ones.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

Proverbs 31:8

Need to report a concern?

Use the contact form and mark it as a safeguarding concern, or write directly to the safeguarding lead. Concerns are taken seriously and acted on.
