Get involved

Find the next step that actually fits your life

Eight routes in, with an honest note on what each one asks of you. None of them are more spiritual than the others.

Eight ways in

Choose something you can sustain

We would much rather you did one thing for years than five things for a month.

If you want the honest answer

The two most useful things you can do

Give monthly. Not because it is more money, but because it is predictable. A savings group takes three years to mature. Predictable income is what lets us commit to that and keep the commitment.

Pray for one community, by name, over years. Specifically rather than generally. In our experience sustained prayer for a particular place rarely leaves the person praying unchanged, and it usually produces the other kinds of involvement on its own.

What we will not ask you to do

Some things commonly asked of supporters in our sector we have decided against.

  • Short-term overseas trips. We are cautious about these, because they frequently cost a partner community more in hosting, translation and supervision than they contribute in work. Where a partner identifies a skills gap they cannot fill locally, we facilitate placements of six months or longer.
  • Sponsoring an individual child. We work with whole households and whole communities. Child sponsorship raises money effectively and creates real problems — singling out one child within a family or class, and building a relationship that can end abruptly when a supporter’s circumstances change.
  • Sharing our posts as an act of advocacy. By all means do, but we would rather equip you to speak about this work accurately — which our advocacy toolkit is for.

If we do not have a role for you

We will tell you. Inventing a role to avoid disappointing a willing volunteer wastes your time and creates work for a team that is already small.

Where we cannot use your offer, we will say so plainly and, where we can, suggest another organisation that might.

From volunteers and partners

What people find when they get involved

“I expected to be useful. I did not expect to be changed. The relationship runs in both directions, which is the whole point.”

Not sure where you fit?

Tell us a bit about yourself and we will suggest something honestly — including telling you if we do not have a role that suits you.
