Community Development

Development that a community can carry on without us

Renewal · Tomorrow

Why this matters

Long-term, locally led change — where the community sets the priorities and owns the results.

The clearest sign that development has worked is that the organisation which started it is no longer needed. That is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Community development is our slowest and least photogenic work. It begins with months of listening, moves through committees and disagreements and revised plans, and ends — when it goes well — with a community that has decided something together and delivered it.

Our role is to resource, train and stay out of the way of decisions that are not ours to make.

What we do

The work in detail

Specific activities, delivered by partner churches and community leaders.

Community-led planning

Facilitated processes where residents map their own assets and needs, agree priorities and decide what they will contribute themselves before any external funding is discussed.

Shared infrastructure

Water points, footbridges, drainage, latrines, storage and meeting spaces — chosen by the community, built with local labour, and maintained by a named local committee.

Local leadership development

Training for committee members, women's group leaders and youth representatives in planning, bookkeeping, conflict resolution and accountability.

Strengthening local organisations

Practical support for small community-based organisations — governance, financial systems, safeguarding and reporting — so they can hold funding directly.

Environment and resilience

Tree planting, soil protection, water harvesting and preparedness planning for the floods and droughts that are becoming more frequent.

Exit planning from day one

Every project has an agreed handover point written into it at the start, with the community confirming they are ready before we step back.

How we work

Principles specific to this ministry

  • No project proceeds without a meaningful local contribution — labour, land, materials or time.
  • Plans are reviewed publicly, in the community, in the local language.
  • We resist adding activities that a community has not asked for.
  • Success is measured by what continues after handover, not by what was delivered.

What we look for

The change we are actually after

  • Committees continue meeting and maintaining assets years after handover.
  • Communities negotiate with other agencies and government from a position of confidence.
  • Local organisations manage their own budgets and reporting.
  • Fewer households are pushed into crisis by predictable seasonal shocks.

These are described qualitatively on purpose. No statistics have been invented for this website — verified figures will be published in our annual reporting.
