Internships & placements
Real work, a real supervisor, and an honest reference
We try hard to make placements genuinely useful to the person doing them, rather than a source of free labour.
What a placement involves
Structured, supervised, and actually about you
We offer internships and placements across programmes, partnerships, communications and finance — and we try to make them genuinely useful rather than a source of free labour.
Placements are structured around real work with real responsibility, with a named supervisor and a written learning plan.
Unpaid internships in the charity sector exclude anyone who cannot afford to work for nothing, which narrows the field to people who are already advantaged. We think that is a problem, and the organisation’s position on pay is noted below and will be confirmed before any placement is advertised.
Areas you could work in
Being straight with you
What a placement here is, and is not
- A defined piece of work you will own, with a real output at the end.
- A named supervisor who meets you regularly, not in principle.
- Exposure to how a small organisation actually makes decisions.
- Honest feedback, including about things you got wrong.
- A reference that says what you actually did.
- An overseas trip. Placements are with our own team, not in partner communities.
- A guaranteed route into a job here. We are small and rarely recruiting.
- Purely administrative support, though some admin comes with every role.
- A position where you will be shielded from the difficult parts of this work.
- Something we will pretend was transformative if it was not.
