Volunteer

Most volunteering with us happens where you already live

Because that is where it is most useful — and because flying volunteers to partner communities usually costs them more than it gives.

Our position

Being honest about what helps

We used to run short-term overseas trips. They were popular, and we eventually accepted that in most cases the hosting, translation and supervision they required from a partner community outweighed the work they contributed.

So we stopped. What we do instead is make good use of volunteers where they already are, and facilitate longer placements only where a partner has identified a specific skills gap they cannot fill locally.

This is a less exciting offer than a two-week trip. It is a more useful one.

How we approach volunteering

  • Most volunteering with us happens where you already live, because that is where it is most useful.
  • We are cautious about short-term overseas placements. They frequently cost a partner community more in hosting, translation and supervision than they contribute in work.
  • Where a partner identifies a skills gap they cannot fill locally, we facilitate placements of six months or longer.
  • Everyone working with children or vulnerable adults completes safeguarding training and background checks, without exception.
  • We will tell you honestly if we do not have a role that fits you rather than inventing one.
