Hope & Care

Meeting urgent needs without stripping away dignity

Why this matters

Practical, immediate support for people facing crisis — food, clean water, shelter and compassionate presence.

When a family cannot eat, when a well runs dry, when illness arrives faster than anyone can prepare for it — need is immediate and it is personal. Hope & Care is how we respond in those moments.

This is the most visible part of our work, and also the part most easily done badly. Relief handed down from outside can quietly communicate that a community has nothing to offer. So we do it differently: our support flows through churches and leaders who already live in the neighbourhood, who know which grandmother is caring for five children alone, and who will still be there long after the crisis has passed.

Care is not a transaction. It is the beginning of a relationship, and often the beginning of reconciliation.

What we do

The work in detail

Specific activities, delivered by partner churches and community leaders.

Food and nutrition support

Regular food provision for households in acute need, with particular attention to young children, expectant mothers and older people living alone. Where possible we source locally, so that support strengthens rather than undercuts nearby traders and farmers.

Safe drinking water

Repairing broken water points, protecting existing springs and helping communities form the small maintenance committees that keep water flowing once we are no longer in the room.

Shelter and essential household items

Help with roofing, bedding, cooking equipment and basic repairs for families displaced by flooding, storm damage, fire or sudden loss of income.

Care for children without a guardian

Support for children who have lost parents or become separated from family — prioritising placement with relatives or within the community over institutional care, with ongoing follow-up.

Crisis response alongside local churches

When a community is hit by a sudden shock, our partners are already present. We resource them quickly so help arrives from a trusted neighbour rather than a stranger.

Pastoral and emotional support

Grief, trauma and exhaustion do not appear on a distribution list. Trained volunteers from partner congregations sit with people, listen, and pray with those who want it.

How we work

Principles specific to this ministry

  • Local leaders identify who is most vulnerable — not an external assessment team.
  • Support is offered without conditions attached to church attendance or belief.
  • We aim to move households from emergency support towards stability, not to keep them on a list.
  • Every distribution is recorded and reviewed, so we can account for what was given and to whom.

What we look for

The change we are actually after

  • Families come through a crisis without selling the assets they need to recover.
  • Children stay in school rather than being pulled out to work or fetch water.
  • Water points keep working because the community owns and maintains them.
  • People who received help describe being treated with respect, not pity.

These are described qualitatively on purpose. No statistics have been invented for this website — verified figures will be published in our annual reporting.
