Relief — Meeting Urgent Needs

Help that arrives in time, and arrives with respect

Horizon: Today

What this is

Why relief matters

Some needs will not wait for a development plan. A family with nothing to eat this week needs food this week.

Relief is our response to that immediacy. It is deliberately limited in scope and deliberately generous in manner: we aim to meet the need in front of us quickly, and to do it in a way that leaves people with their dignity fully intact.

Relief on its own, repeated indefinitely, becomes dependency. That is why it never travels alone in our work — every relief response is connected to the slower commitments that follow it.

In practice

How this works on the ground

Why relief comes first

You cannot reason with someone about a five-year livelihood plan while their child is unwell and there is no food in the house. Acute need crowds out everything else — attention, planning, hope.

Relief clears that space. It buys a household the room to think beyond this week, and it is very often the moment a community first decides that we are worth trusting.

How we keep relief from becoming dependency

Relief is time-bound and reviewed. Every household receiving ongoing support has a named local contact and a plan for moving towards stability, whether through a savings group, a livelihood, school access or family support.

We also buy locally whenever markets are functioning. Importing food into a place where farmers are trying to sell food solves one problem and creates another.

Delivered by neighbours, not strangers

Our relief flows through local churches and community leaders who identify who is most vulnerable. They know the household where a grandmother is raising five grandchildren. An external assessment team, arriving for a week, does not.

This also means help does not disappear when a response ends. The people who delivered it still live there.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.”

Matthew 25:35
