Renewal — Building Lasting Change

The slower work of making crisis less likely next time

Horizon: Tomorrow

What this is

Why renewal matters

Relief answers what is happening now. Renewal asks why it happened, and what would have to change for it not to happen again.

This is the largest part of our programme work and the least dramatic. It involves savings groups meeting weekly for years, teachers slowly getting better at teaching reading, committees arguing about where a water point should go.

It is also where the compounding happens. A household with two income streams, children in school and money set aside is a household that can absorb a bad season on its own.

In practice

How this works on the ground

Owned locally, from the first conversation

Renewal work only lasts if the community owns it, and ownership cannot be handed over at the end of a project. It has to be there at the start.

So communities set the priorities, contribute their own labour, land or funds, and run the committees. We resource, train and account for the money. We do not decide what a community needs.

Built to be handed over

Every renewal project has an agreed handover point written into it from the beginning, with the community confirming they are ready before we step back.

We judge this work by what is still running years later — savings groups still lending, water committees still collecting contributions, teachers still in post — not by what we delivered.

Patient funding for patient work

A savings group takes three years to mature. A child's schooling takes more than a decade. Renewal cannot be funded in twelve-month cycles without distorting it.

This is why monthly partners matter so much to us. Predictable income is what lets us make multi-year commitments to communities and keep them.

“They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendour.”

Isaiah 61:3

Support our renewal work

Give to a specific commitment, or to where it is needed most so our partners can direct it to the greatest need.
